Leadership in business and finance

In relation to time spent at Marston's PLC

"Andrew has worked with Marston's as finance director of our largest trading division and on a number of large complex transactions. These included a securitisation financing and a £175m rights issue. Andrew's contribution was vital to us hitting tight timescales. He needed to co-ordinate a large team of internal staff and advisors, and to have a close grasp of the technical and procedural aspects of both transactions. Inevitably this involved many long hours and required a high degree of resilience, and of course a confidential approach. I would not hesitate in recommending him as a finance professional with a high level of knowledge of company financing."

Ralph Findlay, Chief Executive Marston's PLC

In relation to managing the Rights Issue for Marston's PLC:

"Andrew was called in by one of our clients who was launching a rights issue in a very tight timetable. He project managed both the company's in-house resources and multiple external advisers' input to the production of the prospectus, profit forecast, working capital statement and associated verification materials. All these were prepared to an exceptionally high standard and precisely to timetable. Andrew was rigorous, thoroughly professional and a pleasure to work with."

Crispin Wright, Managing Director NM Rothschild

"Andrew yet again proved his ability to deliver a large, complex project to an extremely demanding timetable and motivating a sizeable team and with great humour under considerable pressure!"

In relation to pensions work

"I worked with Andrew during his time as a key contact for both the Company and as a Trustee of the Marston's pension scheme. My role was managing the relationship for the company providing the actuarial, administration, investment and risk services.

Andrew demonstrated awareness of the conflicts between trustees and sponsors generally, always being able to consider issues in his role as a Trustee in isolation.

He was jointly responsible for managing advisors' services and fees and he did this fairly but firmly, encouraging proactivity whilst ensuring only scoped out work was chargeable.

Andrew took his role as a trustee appropriately seriously. His knowledge of pensions generally was very good, but he was always willing to listen, read and challenge his advisers to increase his technical knowledge still further.

I found him to be pragmatic and able to focus on the key issues and understand the materiality of decisions, e.g. focusing on the overall investment strategy rather than specific investment managers"
